The Discovery of the Katipunan

Teodoro Patino, a worker in the printing of the "Diario de Manila" belonged, as did most of  to the typesetters and pressmen of that establishment, to the Tondo lodge of the Katipunan.  Repentant and alarmed at the rapid strides which that association was taking, he decided to denounce it to this sister who was being educated in the college of Looban, under the direction of the illustrious and virtuous Sisters of Charity.  The girl repeated the revealation to the Mother Superior, who called Patino into her presence and, on being convinced of the seriousness of the affair, sent him to the Rev. Friar Mariano Gil, his parochial curate in the Tondo district.  To Father Mariano, Patino repeated what we have set forth in this report, as much as a simple disciple would be apt to know; he stated that in the office of the "Diario" they were secretly printing receipts and proclamations and making cuts for the Katipunan, and finally he promised to show the place where the lithographing stones were hidden.

Padre Gil made an appointment at the convent with Senors Grund and Cortes, the lieutenants of the Civil Guard detachments in that ward and to them he explained what had occurred.  They immediately reported it to their chief.  Before that night was over, the lithographing stones and the receipt[s] and by-laws printed for the Katipunan were in the possession of Padre Mariano; these he placed at the disposal of the body.

At the police station Patino was examined thoroughly and the arrest of twenty two conspirators immediately followed.  Their houses were searched and man documents and evidence which supported the charge were found.  It is not necessary to elaborate upon the efforts of all ranks and grades of the corps, efforts which continuing for the next fifteen days without a moment's intermission, finally crowned our work with the greatest success.

More than 500 prisoners of admitted or proved importance were brought to the courts, and with them, all the documents, books, pampjlets, seals, effects and files of the Supreme Council.  The great conspiracy was revealed and destroyed.  Some have already expiated their crimes.  Some have already been deported, and not a few now await in their prisons the results of human justice.  (Taylor v1, 200-201)
